Mari Meszaros

Quarrel by Mari Meszaros

The works of Mari Meszaros always begin with the representation of the human body, and its organic relationship to its various parts.  Lyrically inclined faces and torsos and gestures of parts of body are formed with a subtle balance.  They are reliefs made of glass.  Her sculptures are built out of shards, fractures and cracks, vestiges, and traces that create the soul and emotions of her objects.  They refer to history, growth, aging and wear as Meszaros adds and takes away from her works.  Since 1982 she has lived and worked in he Netherlands.

“As long as I can remember I have been fascinated by the arrogant power of survival of objects that carry in themselves traces of time and human life…In my work I change living persons into “objects”, future documents of their present-day life. But still, these objects differ from archaeological discoveries in ice sheets and peat bogs. With the help of plaster casts that preserve their personal physical dimensions, I make sculptures that express eternal, universal human feelings. I make them from glass, a material that is as fragile as human beings, and as strong as humanity.” artist statement
