“The paintings I create are a documentation of memory and the painting process. Not unlike dioramas, the pictures function as windows into an imagined world and should be understood as suggestions of places, experiences and responses to the art that inspires me. The images evolve in layers our of various states. As forms coalesce, I guide the picture towards an abstracted sense of place. The idea of landscape dominates these images, but the perspective is not necessarily fixed, as they are open to interpretation.” artist statement

“The act of painting is a vital experience.  My art is about memory, imagination and the process of painting.  Meaning in the work can be derived from specific feelings I have about nature as well as my responses to the art that inspires me.  The overall effect of the paintings should be understood metaphorically.

I create intuitively to develop images that appear as a view into an imagined space.  The arrangement of colors, textures and shapes are fundamental characteristics of my paintings which are integrated to convey a dazzling optical effect and a spirited emotional quality.  The sensuous qualities of paint make these aspects both conspicuous and abstract”  Artist Statement, August 2012

“Fresh and challenging aptly describes Brian Smith.  Over the past few years, Smith’s landscapes have followed a course from expressionist to abstract expressionist to pure abstraction.  It’s been a natural progression for Smith, and a wise one.  Smith allows his innate sense of movement and color to seize the reigns.  Thick, sweeping brush strokes flurry about on the canvas; occasional paint drips remain, dried and untouched, adding to the works textural depth; Smith’s wonderful palette of bright golds, deep reds and vibrant greens lives up to the standards of his previous work.  Smith has the capability to keep things in order, to present images in a manner that we find familiar and identifiable.  (He) has taken the next step – that of creating a shared experience through the abstract conveyance of emotion and feeling.”
